Tour Bud Blog Post “Origins”

I was on my way back from a tour of different wineries in the Niagara region. It was really something, seeing the whole process from start to finish. The different philosophies and practices of winemakers from one winery to the next can have huge differences, I had no idea. The type of wood they age the wines in – that makes a huge difference! The way these artisans speak about wine, and before that, the grapes – with such passion, it blows you away. Even if you’re not the biggest fan of wine, you emerge from one of these tours with a new appreciation for all the hard work and love that goes into making one of the worlds oldest and most popular alcoholic beverages.

As I sat on the bus staring at the hypnotic patterns formed by seemingly identical vines, I couldn’t help but think, ‘Man, I could really go for a joint right now’. But there were no scheduled stops until the final drop-off, still a good hour and 27 minutes away, but who’s counting. Sigh.

I started to wonder what it might be like to live in a world where we were flying past row after row of cannabis plants. ‘‘Betcha they’d look different,’ I thought, recalling the many different strains I’d heard of. To be honest, I had no idea. I’d never seen any cannabis plants in person. I knew Indica leaves looked different than Sativa leaves, but I didn’t really know how different. I didn’t know how tall plants grew, or for how long. I didn’t know how much bud they produce, what a female vs. male plant looks like, or how fresh, living plants smell.

I started to wonder how philosophies and practices might differ from one grower to the next. I wondered what reasons a grower might give for choosing to grow hydroponically, or outdoors in a field, or in a greenhouse. How might something as simple as drying harvested buds look different from one place to the next? How might this grower’s Sour Diesel stack up against this other grower’s in a taste comparison?

Sigh. ‘I guess that’ll never happen,’ disheartened my daydream tour wasn’t the one I was actually returning from.

A handful of years later, and that journey back from Niagara has stuck with me as the legalization of recreational cannabis is happening.

Recreational. Are you kidding me?!

I wouldn’t have believed it back then, but here we are.

Tour Buds was created because I’m not the only one to have this daydream. There are many people who want to expand their horizons and learn more about this equally passion-driven topic. OK, so no frolicking in the fields just yet, we’re working on it.

But we have made friends with many great people and experts in the industry, and we’re ready and willing to help anyone with canna-curiosity navigate this exciting landscape in one of the most fun and social ways we can imagine.
